UCCS Surpasses Century Mark in Win Against Chadron State

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - University of Colorado Colorado Springs senior guard Abby Kirchoff led both teams with 24 points as the Mountain Lions (20-5 / 15-4 RMAC) surpassed the century mark for the fifth time in program history in an 100-68 victory against Chadron State (8-16 / 8-12 RMAC) tonight in the Gallogly Events Center. Kirchoff also surpassed 500 points and is third in UCCS records with 519 points this season.

The Mountain Lions scored the first 15 points of the game and held the Eagles to no field goals for almost seven minutes to start the game. Chadron State scored eight straight points to cut the lead down to seven points at 15-8 with 10:48 left in the first half, but UCCS responded with an 11-4 run to retake a double-digit lead that lasted through the rest of the half. The Mountain Lions led by at least 20 points for the entire second half in route to the 32-point victory.

Kirchoff went four-of-six from the three-point line and a perfect six-of-six at the free throw line to record the third 500-point season in program history. Brittany Hernandez added 12 points for her third straight 10-point game. Jessika Kienitz and Sam Patterson both scored 10 points off the bench. Kienitz and Shanah Leaf shared the team lead with seven rebounds as UCCS out-rebounded Chadron State 43-31.

The Mountain Lions scored 100 points for the first time since setting the single-game record of 109 on Nov. 25, 2011. Tonight's performance was two short of tying the record for most points in a conference game (102 vs. Fort Lewis on Jan. 28, 1994, in a Colorado Athletic Conference game) and one short of tying the record for points in an RMAC game (twice, most recently vs. Nebraska-Kearney on Feb. 12, 2010). UCCS has recorded two of the top-scoring games in program history under Head Coach Shawn Nelson after the season-opening 93 points against Lubbock Christian that ranks eighth.

UCCS will close out the 2014-15 regular season home schedule on Saturday night at 5:30 p.m., against Black Hills State. The Mountain Lions won the first game between the teams 67-66 in Spearfish, S.D., last month. The Yellow Jackets (14-12 / 12-8 RMAC) defeated Colorado State-Pueblo earlier tonight 59-51.
