UCCS Drops Overtime Game at Fort Lewis

DURANGO, Colo. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs senior guard Abby Kirchoff scored 10 points in the overtime period, but a three-point shot from Fort Lewis with 2.8 seconds to play resulted in a 62-61 decision in favor of the Skyhawks (13-9 / 10-8 RMAC) in Whalen Gymnasium. Kirchoff led both teams with 21 points and moved into third in UCCS season scoring records.

Brittany Hernandez recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. She moved into seventh in UCCS records with 219 rebounds this season. Kellie Krueger earned her third career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

Both teams stayed within a possession of each other for the first 17 minutes of the game before the Mountain Lions closed out the half with a 13-3 run to take a 30-23 halftime lead. Hernandez had eight points and six rebounds at halftime.

UCCS kept at least a five-point lead until Fort Lewis assembled a 12-2 run to take a 42-41 advantage with 7:49 to play. Hernandez tied the game at 49-49 with 3:21 left in the second half in what would turn out to be the final points of regulation. The Mountain Lions forced one Skyhawk turnover and Hernandez made her lone blocked shot of the game in the final three minutes to prevent Fort Lewis from scoring.

Fort Lewis scored first in the overtime period with a pair of free throws at the 3:45 mark, and Kirchoff scored the first of her three 3-pointers 15 seconds later. Her second three-pointer made it a four-point lead at 55-51, and her third three-pointer broke a 55-55 tie with 1:14 to play in overtime.

UCCS led 60-59 after a pair of Fort Lewis free throws with 13.1 seconds to go, and was able to draw the foul with 11.5 seconds to play. Kirchoff missed her first free throw, but made the second to make it a 61-59 advantage for the Mountain Lions. The Skyhawks made a deep three-pointer on the far side of the court with 2.8 seconds to play, and the Mountain Lions couldn't complete a deep pass on the inbound play to get a final shot off before the buzzer.

Kirchoff scored 17 of her 21 points in the second half and overtime periods and has 495 points this season. She needs 69 points to tie her own UCCS record set last season.

The Mountain Lions will return home for the final time in the regular season next weekend. UCCS will host Chadron State on Friday and Black Hills State on Saturday in a pair of 5:30 p.m., games at the Gallogly Events Center.
