Whitney Weber went three-of-six at the plate and
Kylie Barnard made her first collegiate home run to score three runs as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs suffered a pair of setbacks on day two of the Desert Stinger Classic. The Mountain Lions (2-2) fell 9-0 in the first game to Lubbock Christian and 17-4 to No. 10 California State-Monterey Bay in the night game.
The Chaps scored first in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run home run over the fence in left-center field. Â The Mountain Lions put two baserunners in play in the second and third innings and couldn't bring them home as the game remained at 2-0 through three complete innings.
Lubbock Christian used another two-run home run to take a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, and Hailey Miller worked out a bases loaded fifth inning with a strikeout to end the fifth. The Chaps scored five runs in the sixth inning to win the game in a run-rule decision.
The Mountain Lions took advantage of walks to
Dani Fonseca and Barnard to open the bottom of the second inning against the Otters, but left two runners on base after a fielder's choice, foul out and fly out on the next three batters. Monterey Bay scored seven runs in the top of the third inning to take a 7-0 lead against UCCS.
Makenna Smith led off the bottom of the third with a double to right-center field, and Weber doubled to left-center field to move Smith to third with no outs.
Emily Jennings brought Smith home with a single through the left side to record the first earned run allowed by the Otters in five games this season. Fonseca reached on a fielder's choice that took Weber out a home to setup Barnard's home run on a 0-1 count with two outs to bring the game to 7-4 for UCCS. A fly-out on the next batter sent the teams to the fourth inning.
The Otters added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning and then scored eight runs in the fifth inning. Weber opened the bottom of the fifth with a single, but a fielder's choice and pair of pop-ups to infielders ended the game in the second run-rule decision of the day in a 17-4 result.
Weber and Barnard extended their hitting streaks to four games to begin their college careers. Barnard is first in the RMAC with a .556 batting average through four games, while Weber is third with .545 among student-athletes with multiple games this season. The Mountain Lions are second as a team with a .409 on-base percentage.
UCCS will wrap up the Desert Stinger Classic in a 3 p.m., MST, game on Sunday against St. Edward's. The Hilltoppers (7-5) won 14-5 and 11-1 in today's games.
