White Breaks UCCS Season Scoring Record in Mountain Lions' 20th Win

DURANGO, Colo. - No. 15 University of Colorado Colorado Springs recorded its second straight 20-win season and junior guard Derrick White set the season scoring record in a 90-75 victory at Fort Lewis tonight. White scored 35 points to lead the Mountain Lions (20-4 / 14-4 RMAC) at Whalen Gymnasium.

White has 622 points, and surpassed his program record of 621 points set last season. He added 11 rebounds for his fifth points-rebounds double-double of the season and seventh overall of the season. White needs 13 rebounds to tie for No. 10 in single-season records and is fifth with 444 career rebounds.

UCCS trailed for only 14 seconds in the game and opened an early 15-5 lead in the first six minutes of the game. The Skyhawks made it a one-point game at 22-21with 9:10 left in the first half before the Mountain Lions responded with a 14-3 run. Fort Lewis closed out the half on a 10-2 run to make it a four-point lead for UCCS at the break, 38-34.

The Skyhawks narrowed it to a two-point game with 17 minutes to play, and then used free throws to cut the Mountain Lion advantage down to five points with 14:53 to play. UCCS assembled a 10-1 run to push the lead back to 59-45 with 12:27 to play and kept at least a three-possession lead for the rest of the night. 

Alex Welsh added 14 points and Tim Billingsley went was perfect at the three-point line (3-of-3) and free throw line (4-of-4) to finish with 13 points.

UCCS went 25-of-26 at the free throw line as a team, and a perfect 18-of-18 in the second half. The Mountain Lions made 14 steals, the most in a conference game this season. UCCS needs one more win to match the program record for season victories, and has at least five games remaining to achieve it.

The Mountain Lions will return home for the final regular season home games of the season on Friday against Chadron State and on Saturday against Black Hills State. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m.
