DURANGO, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team (6-5, 2-3 RMAC) will begin the New Year at noon in a road game at Fort Lewis (7-3, 3-2 RMAC) before traveling back across the Continental Divide for a 5 p.m., game on Saturday at Adams State (2-6, 1-4 RMAC). Both games will be carried live for free with video and audio through the UCCS portal on Stretch Internet.
The Mountain Lions are 2-1 on the road in conference play and will be making their first trip since a 1-1 weekend at Colorado Mesa and Westminster three weeks ago. UCCS and the rest of Division II took last week off for the holidays after the Mountain Lions finished with home games against Regis and Chadron State on Dec. 18-19.
Brittany Hernandez is leading the RMAC with 21.0 points per game and is sixth with 7.2 rebounds per game. She is on pace to set the UCCS single-season scoring average record by 0.1 over
Abby Kirchoff's average in the 2014 season. Hernandez is a two-time conference offensive player of the week this season.
Jen Vigil leads the conference with 3.1 steals per game and Hernandez is third with 2.8 per contest. The Mountain Lions are second in the league with 12 steals per game and with a +7.27 turnover margin. UCCS is No. 12 in Division II with 132 steals this season and No. 16 in steals per game.
The Mountain Lions are one game behind Fort Lewis in the conference standings after the first month of play. The Skyhawks are seventh in the latest Division II South Central Region Media Poll. Fort Lewis won the last meeting between the two teams 62-61 in overtime in Durango on Feb. 14, 2015.
Friday's game will be a meeting of the top two scoring offenses in the RMAC with Fort Lewis' 73.7 per game and UCCS' 73.1 per game. The Skyhawks have two student-athletes averaging double-digit points. Astrea Reed is leading the team with 11.6 points per game, while Mary Rambo leads the rebounding with 7.8 boards per game and 55 percent from the field.
UCCS swept the season series with Adams State last year and is one game ahead of the Grizzlies in the standings. Lena Jaycox is averaging 12.4 points per game while Cydney McHenry and Madison Merschel led a balanced rebounding effort with five rebounds per game.
