Mountain Lions Win Third Straight in 3-0 Shutout

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs won its third straight game on its third shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory tonight against South Dakota Mines. The Mountain Lions (7-3, 5-1 RMAC) remained in a four-way tie for second in the conference standings after the other three teams won their games today.

UCCS controlled the tempo early in the match and earned two corner kicks within the first 10 minutes. J.R. Calhoun scored his fifth goal of the season in the 11th minute on a pass from Conor Langenbahn. It was his second straight game with a goal and he took the team lead in goals this season. The Mountain Lion defense held the Hardrockers to no shots on goal in the first half while the UCCS offense put three of its four shots on target for the 1-0 lead at halftime.

Blake Barnes scored his first goal off the season off a free kick from Josh Berntsson in the 58th minute, and the Mountain Lions added its third goal just more than two minutes later on a goal by Sebastian Hertzberg. It was Hertzberg's four goal of the season and he scored it off a pass from JJ Meyer. The Mountain Lions outshot the Hardrockers 11-2 in the second half and gave up no shots after the 53rd minute to claim the 3-0 win in the first meeting between the two programs in history.

Peter Vorgin earned his fourth start of the season and shared the shutout with Alex Reichler, who played the final 10 minutes of the game at keeper. The Mountain Lion defense allowed no shots on goal to reach the goalkeepers in the best defensive performance in that category for a conference game since Oct. 7, 2011. Hertzberg led UCCS with four shots.

The Mountain Lions will remain at home for a 2:30 p.m., game on Sunday against Regis (4-5, 3-4 RMAC). The game will not be considered in the RMAC standings, but will count for NCAA regional consideration.
