COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs won its fourth straight game with its second straight shutout on a goal from
Josh Berntsson early in the second half for a 1-0 victory today against Regis.
Peter Vogrin earned his first complete shutout with five saves for the Mountain Lions (8-3).
UCCS built a 5-0 shot advantage through the first 25 minutes of the game and didn't allow a shot by the Rangers until the 27th minute. Regis cut the shot margin to 5-3 by the end of the half with both teams putting two shots on goal as the squads were tied 0-0 at the break.
Berntsson put a header shot into the net in the 51st minute in his third goal of the season and first since Sept. 25, against Colorado Christian.
J.R. Calhoun earned his second assist of the season after his pass from the right sideline to Berntsson inside the box. Calhoun moved into a tie for the team lead with 12 points.
The Rangers had two strong opportunities to score a goal in the second half with a mismatch against the Mountain Lion defense, but both shots went wide of the net. Regis put strong pressure in the final 10 minutes of the game with five shots and a corner kick opportunity, but Vogrin used two saves in the final 96 seconds to preserve the shutout and the 1-0 victory for UCCS.
The four-game winning streak is tied for the fourth-longest in program history and the back-to-back shutouts are the first since 2013. The Mountain Lions have taken at least five shots on goal in six of the last seven games.
UCCS will be on the road for a game in Rapid City, S.D., for a 6 p.m., contest at South Dakota Mines. The Mountain Lions defeated the Hardrockers 3-0 last Friday night.
