UCCS Wins Fifth Straight with Third Straight Shutout

RAPID CITY, S.D. – University of Colorado Colorado Springs junior goalkeeper Peter Vogrin extended his shutout streak to 319 minutes and Zach Egeler's goal in the 61st minute was his second game-winner of the season as the Mountain Lions (9-3) won their fifth straight game in a 1-0 victory at South Dakota Mines (1-11-1) at Sioux Park. The win streak is tied for the second-longest in program history and it's the third five-game win streak since 2012.

Neither team was able to put a shot on the board for the first 10 minutes of the game, but the Mountain Lions outshot the Hardrockers 8-0 for the final 35 minutes of the half with five shots on goal. South Dakota Mines was able to stop each of the UCCS attacks and the game remained in a 0-0 at halftime.

The Mountain Lions continued offensive pressure with a header shot 74 seconds into the second half, and a blocked shot by JJ Meyer led to Egeler's goal with just less than 30 minutes to play in regulation. UCCS held a six-shot advantage in the second half at 11-5, with two of the Hardrocker shots reaching Vogrin who made both saves to earn his second collegiate shutout of the week.

Both of Egeler's goals this season have been game-winners, after his goal in the final minute of double overtime at MSU Denver on Sept. 30. The Mountain Lions recorded 19 shots as a team, but no student-athlete had more than two shots in a balanced offensive effort. It was the most shots in a regulation game since 20 against Colorado Christian on Sept. 25.

Vogrin hasn't given up a goal in nearly a month with three starts and a reserve appearance in that stretch. He is one shutout away from entering both the season and career top-10 records in UCCS history.

The Mountain Lions will return to Colorado on Saturday and be back on the road on Sunday for a 2:30 p.m., game against Regis. UCCS won the first meeting between the two teams on Oct. 11 in a 1-0 shutout, but the game this Sunday will be the one that counts in the conference standings. The Rangers (4-7, 3-4 RMAC) loss to MSU Denver 3-1 earlier today. A win on Sunday would match the longest win streak in program history, set from Sept. 3-19, 1999.
