Calhoun's Goal Leads UCCS to Win Against CSU-Pueblo

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - University of Colorado Colorado Springs junior J.R. Calhoun took advantage of a defensive miscue by Colorado State-Pueblo in the 80th minute to score the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory for the Mountain Lions today against the ThunderWolves. Sebastian Hertzberg scored the first goal of the game in the 35th minute on a penalty kick in the 30th victory against CSU-Pueblo in the all-time series.

UCCS (6-3, 4-1 RMAC) controlled the game with four shots in the first 10 minutes and held CSU-Pueblo (5-5, 1-3 RMAC) to no shots until the 18th minute. The Mountain Lions earned its first scoring opportunity since a pair of shots on goal in the opening minutes when the ThunderWolves committed a foul within their own goalie box in the 35th minute. Sebastian Hertzberg took the penalty kick and used a shot into the lower left corner while the CSU-Pueblo keeper dove in the opposite direction for the 1-0 lead. CSU-Pueblo tied the game with 8.4 seconds left in the half off a corner kick.

The Mountain Lions switched out goalkeepers in the second half with Peter Vogrin making his fourth appearance of the season. UCCS started the second half like the first half with a 5-0 shot advantage in the first 20 minutes of the period. Conor Langenbahn recorded the first shot on goal in the half for the Mountain Lions in the 74th minute. The Mountain Lions continued the offensive push, and a pass from Hertzberg into the box to Calhoun ultimately led to the game-winning goal in the 80th minute. Hertzberg's pass from 35 yards away from the net met Calhoun 10 yards away, and after the goalkeeper misjudged the ball and slid past it, Calhoun shot the ball past the remaining defender for the game-winning goal. The ThunderWolves made four shots in the final 10 minutes, but couldn't tie the game again as UCCS earned the 2-1 win.

Calhoun's goal was his fourth of the season and is fourth in the RMAC for total goals this season. Josh Berntsson added three shots with one on goal as the Mountain Lions held at 16-10 overall shot advantage today. Vogrin made two saves in the second half.

UCCS is in a four-way tie for second in the RMAC standings with Colorado Mesa, Fort Lewis and MSU Denver. The Mountain Lions will remain at home on Friday for a 7:30 p.m., game against South Dakota Mines. The Hardrockers (1-8-1, 1-5 RMAC) lost to conference-leader Colorado Mines 4-1 earlier today.
