Derrick White and
Alex Welsh scored 51 of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs' 96 points to lead the No. 12 Mountain Lions to a 96-75 win at Chadron State tonight at the Chicoine Center. The win, combined with the Colorado Mines loss at Fort Lewis, moved UCCS into a three-way tie for first in the RMAC with Mines and MSU Denver.
The Eagles scored the first four points of the game and the game stayed within a four-point margin for each until a 12-1 run put UCCS ahead 25-15 with 11:16 to play. The Mountain Lions led by double digits for the final 28 minutes of the game and led by at least 15 points for the final 17 minutes of play to claim the victory.
White scored 26 and Welsh scored 25 and shot a combined 59.4 percent from the field.
Dalton Patten added 12 points. Welsh led a balanced rebounding effort with six rebounds. White, Patten and
Shane Jensen each added five rebounds in a 33-23 advantage for UCCS.
The Mountain Lions shot 63 percent in the first half and finished with 55.6 percent for the game. It was the 12th game this season above 50 percent and the sixth game above 55 percent. UCCS shot 16-of-19 at the free throw line to match the best performance at the line this season at 84.2 percent.
UCCS will return home for the first time in three weeks for games against Western New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands next Friday and Saturday, respectively. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.
