#22 UCCS Takes RMAC Lead in 72-56 Win

Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team used a 16-point win to move into first in the RMAC standings with a 72-56 victory against Colorado Mesa tonight in the Gallogly Events Center. Brittany Hernandez led the Mountain Lions (13-2 / 8-1 RMAC) with 30 points, nine rebounds and five steals.

The Mavericks (11-3 / 8-2 RMAC) maintained a slim lead through a majority of the opening seven minutes and built a 17-13 lead with 13:21 left in the half before an 11-2 run put UCCS ahead 24-19 with 9:11 left in the half. The Mountain Lions expanded the advantage to a 12-point lead by halftime on 48 percent shooting from the field, led by 16 points from Abby Kirchoff.

UCCS led by at least 10 points for the duration of the second half and held the Mavericks to 27 percent from the field in the final period. The Mountain Lions built a game-high 18-point lead with 5:12 left to play after a pair of free throws from Hernandez as part of a six-of-six free throw performance in the half.

Hernandez matched her season-best scoring mark tonight in her second 30-point game in the last four games. Abby Kirchoff added 23 points in her eighth 20-point game of the season. Gabby Ramirez made a game-high six assists.

The Mountain Lions will go on the road for the first time in 2015 with a game next Friday night at Colorado Mines. The Orediggers (7-8 / 2-7 RMAC) lost 79-56 to MSU Denver earlier tonight.
