COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team will begin a three-match road weekend tonight to open the 2014 RMAC season at Colorado State-Pueblo. The match between the Mountain Lions (3-5 / 0-0 RMAC) and the ThunderWolves (6-3 / 0-0 RMAC) will begin at 7 p.m., at Massari Arena.

Both teams went 3-1 last weekend in the Steel & Silver Classic co-hosted by both institutions. The teams played the same four teams in Nebraska-Kearney, Lindenwood, Pittsburg State and Alaska, with the loss for both teams against No. 6 Nebraska-Kearney.

UCCS hit better than .200 in its three wins, and peaked at .306 in a three-set win against Alaska. The Mountain Lions also lowered their hitting and serving errors that limited their success in the opening weekend in Texas, with a 38 percent dropping in service errors and 31 percent drop in hitting errors.

Kim Catlett earned her second straight all-tournament honor after she was third in the tournament for kills, fourth in digs and fifth in service aces. Lauren Hahn also earned a spot on the all-tournament team last weekend with 3.29 kills per game, helped by a 27-kill performance against Pittsburg State.

With two-thirds of the team being freshmen, the Mountain Lions are in a tie for No. 10 in the RMAC for overall record. UCCS is a half-game behind Western New Mexico and a game behind eight-place New Mexico Highlands.

Colorado State-Pueblo had the fourth-best record in the RMAC through the non-conference schedule after a split in its season-opening tournament at Midwestern State. The ThunderWolves are led on offense by Mariangel Perez, who is averaged 4.4 points per game off of 3.86 kills, 0.31 aces and 0.33 blocks per set.

Tonight will be the opening contest in the 2014-15 Steel & Silver Series between the two institutions. UCCS won the traveling trophy in the all-sport competition for the ninth consecutive time last season, although by a one-point margin. The upcoming year will be the first year to include men's cross country and men's indoor and outdoor track and field, which means the first team to 31 points will win the trophy.
