Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs used late scoring for the second time in the 2014 RMAC Tournament with a pair of goals in the final seven minutes to force overtime, but had two shots blocked in the penalty kick shootout in the RMAC Championship Game today at Walker Field. The Colorado School of Mines won the title with a 4-3 advantage in the shootout after a 3-3 tie in 110 minutes of action.
The Orediggers (12-7-1) took a 2-0 lead by halftime and held UCCS to one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes. The Mountain Lions (11-8-2) scored their first goal of the game off a corner kick by
Luke Chapman, who found
Conor Langenbahn for the header in the 58th minute. Colorado Mines retook a two-goal advantage off a penalty kick nine minutes later for a 3-1 advantage.
UCCS struggled offensively for 12 minutes after the penalty kick goal before a shot from
James Roberts sparked the offense with less than 12 minutes in regulation. Roberts took another shot, this one on frame, with 7:51 to play before the Mountain Lions earned a free kick less than a minute later.
Liam Levy-Philipp's kick led to another set piece goal for
Derek Saunier, his first of the season.
Josh Berntsson scored 52 seconds later to tie the game at 3-3 in the 84th minute. The Orediggers got one shot off in the final minutes of the half, but it went wide as the teams went to over tied at 3-3.
The Mountain Lions added to a 10-5 shot advantage in the second half with a 4-2 advantage in the two overtime periods. The UCCS defense held the Orediggers to a single shot on goal in the final 65 minutes of the game, which came with five minutes to play in the second overtime period. Chapman took a shot with five seconds left in the second overtime that was saved by Colorado Mines to set up the penalty kick shootout to determine the conference tournament champion.
UCCS was the first team to begin shooting, and did so as Colorado Mines put in a new goalkeeper for the shootout. Roberts made the first kick, and the Orediggers answered to even the shootout at 1-1. Mines blocked
Mathew Cox's attempt, and then took the 2-1 advantage on the following shot. Berntsson evened it at 2-2, and the Orediggers retook the lead at 3-2 after three rounds of the shootout.
Sebastian Hertzberg made it 3-3 in the shootout, and
David Meyer blocked the Oredigger attempt to keep it 3-3 after four complete rounds. Meyer immediately took his place as the fifth Mountain Lion kicker, and the shot was saved by Colorado Mines. The Orediggers clinched the tournament championship with a successful kick for a 4-3 advantage in the shootout after five rounds.
Berntsson led both teams with five shots as part of a 22-16 overall advantage for the Mountain Lions against the Orediggers. Meyer made three saves and led a defense that held Colorado Mines to its lowest shot output since Oct. 15.
UCCS will await its NCAA postseason future when the Division II Men's Soccer Committee releases the national bracket on Monday night. The Mountain Lions will be competing for one of three positions in the South Central Region along with teams from the RMAC, Lone Star and Heartland Conferences.
