COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The No. 18 University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball earned a crucial regional victory in overtime last night, and will look to pick up another regional win tonight when the Mountain Lions (1-0) take on Rogers State (0-1) at 5 p.m., in the Auraria Events Center in downtown Denver. The Hillcats fell 73-68 to No. 3 Metropolitan State University of Denver last night and held a two-point lead midway through the second half against the Roadrunners.
Both teams trailed in their respective games by double-digit points at halftime, but UCCS overcame the 10-point deficit with
Alex Welsh's game-tying three-pointer with 10 seconds in the second half to force overtime. Rogers State made a three-pointer with seven seconds to play to pull within three points of MSU Denver but couldn't close the gap by fouling in the final seconds.
The Mountain Lions were led the second half and overtime with 22 points from preseason All-American
Derrick White, who recorded his sixth 30-point game in his career with 31 points overall. He moved into sixth in the UCCS record books for scoring and needs 10 points to tie for fifth all-time and 19 points to tie for fourth. Welsh is in an early lead for RMAC rebounding with 11 boards last night and needs eight rebounds tonight to move into a tie for seventh in program career records.
UCCS will be going for its second straight 2-0 start of the season, and if the women go 2-0 with a win against Eastern New Mexico in Golden, it would mark the first time the men's and women's teams started the same season 2-0 in UCCS history. The women ended a 23-game winning streak for Lubbock Christian in a game that also will likely prove to be an important regional contest at the end of the season.
Fans will be able to follow tonight's game with live stats through MSU Denver, live audio through UCCS and live video through America One Sports. The audio feed will be free and fans can listen through the Mountain Lion YouTube channel.
