Alex Welsh scored a career-high 27 points and went 11-of-13 from the field to lead the No. 18 Mountain Lions (2-0) to a 75-60 victory against Rogers State (0-2) tonight in the Auraria Events Center. White scored 18 points to move into fifth in UCCS career scoring records.
UCCS never trailed against the Hillcats and quickly opened a 10-point lead at 15-5 in the first four minutes of the game. Rogers State cut it down to a two-point game at 49-47 with 10 minutes left in the second half, but the Mountain Lions responded with a 13-2 run to expand the lead back to 62-49 with 5:22 to play.
The Mountain Lions shot better than 50 percent from the field for the fourth time in the last 10 games with 52 percent tonight. UCCS also shot better than 80 percent from the free throw line for the third time in the last five games.
White moved into fifth in UCCS career scoring records and is one point away from a tie for fourth with 1,110 points. He is 12 points away from a tie for third in program records. Welsh is three rebounds away from a tie for eighth in career records with five rebounds tonight and 365 in his career.
UCCS is 2-0 for the second straight season and was one of our RMAC teams, along with MSU Denver, CSU-Pueblo and Fort Lewis, to go 2-0 in the opening weekend.
The Mountain Lions will open the 2014-15 home season on Friday with Northern New Mexico. The Eagles are 4-1 this season.
