Box Score DENVER, Colo. - The No. 18 University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball team trailed by 10 points at halftime and tied it up with 10 seconds left in regulation on its way to a 91-89 overtime win against Arkansas-Fort Smith in the season-opener.
Derrick White led the Mountain Lions (1-0) with 31 points while
Alex Welsh brought down 11 rebounds and made the game-tying three-pointer to force overtime.
Fort Smith shot 52 percent from the field and 50 percent from the three-point line for a 42-32 advantage against UCCS at halftime. The Lions made seven free throws in the first half compared to none by the Mountain Lions and out-rebounded UCCS by eight boards, 26-18, in the first 20 minutes.
The Mountain Lions started the second half on a 13-2 run to tie the game within the first four minutes for a 45-44 advantage between the two NCAA tournament teams from a season ago. The teams remained within a possession of each other for the next nine minutes until Fort Smith opened a six-point lead with 5:45 left in the second half. The Lions maintained a lead before
TreShawn Wilford made a layup and drew the foul to complete a three-point play and tie the game at 76-76 with 1:25 to play.
A foul by UCCS on the next Lion possession setup two free throws for Fort Smith, but the Lions wouldn't be able to convert and White controlled the rebound on the second missed attempt with 1:05 left in the half. The same person who missed the free throws made a steal on the Mountain Lion possession, and he made a three-pointer with 19 seconds to play to put Fort Smith ahead 79-76. Welsh made the game-tying three-pointer nine seconds later on an assist from White, and UCCS forced a Lion turnover with three seconds left, but a missed three-point from White sent the teams to overtime time at 79-79.
UCCS took a three-point lead at 87-84 with 1:51 left in overtime, but Fort Smith tied it at 87-87 with three free throws over a span of two possessions with 1:07 to play. White put the Mountain Lions back ahead at 89-87, but the Lions responded with their own layup with 31 seconds to play to tie the game at 89-89. With no shot clock, the Mountain Lions brought the ball down the court and took a shot from the left side of the lane that went in with 3.1 seconds left in overtime for a 91-89 lead. Both teams took timeouts, and a half court desperation shot missed high for the 91-89 season-opening victory.
White moved into sixth in UCCS career scoring records and needs 10 points to tie for fifth in all-time records. It was the sixth 30-point game in his career. Welsh earned the double-double with 17 points in addition to his team-high 11 rebounds.

The Mountain Lions will continue the opening weekend against Rogers State at 5 p.m., at the Auraia Events Center. The Hillcats lost 73-68 to No. 3 Metro State in the second game of the night at Auraria.
