Kim Catlett led the Mountain Lion offense for the fifth straight night with an 18-kill performance in a 3-1 loss for UCCS (9-14 / 5-9 RMAC) to No. 9 Colorado School of Mines (20-2 / 13-1 RMAC) at Lockridge Arena. Scores went 21-25, 20-25, 27-25, 17-25 for the Orediggers.
UCCS held the lead at 5-4 early in the first set and was able to tie Colorado Mines three times in the second set, but Colorado Mines used extended runs in both sets to take a 2-0 match lead. The Mountain Lions put together its own four-point rally in the third set to take an 11-9 lead and maintained a lead until Mines went on a 6-2 run for a 22-20 advantage. With the Orediggers ahead 23-21, UCCS scored six of the final eight points of the set to win 27-25 against the fourth-ranked offense in Division II this season.
Colorado Mines opened a 5-1 lead in the fourth set to force a Mountain Lion timeout. UCCS came back within a point at 6-5, but the Orediggers scored the next three points and kept at least a three-point lead for the rest of the set for a 25-17 decision and the 3-1 match win.
Catlett led a strong three-person offensive attack with 14 kills from
Cassidy Bush and 13 from
Lauren Hahn. Bush hit a team-best .310 in her most kills since Oct. 3 and Hahn hit .267 in her best hitting performance since Oct. 2. The Mountain Lions finished the night with 60 kills in its best team performance since Sept. 26 and hit above .250 for the fifth time this season and first since Oct. 4.
Madison Palmer made four blocks and
Natasha Habert made 16 digs to lead the Mountain Lion defense.
UCCS will face its fifth straight team mentioned in the latest AVCA Top 25 poll on Tuesday at 7 p.m., against Regis. The Rangers (14-7 / 9-4 RMAC) were receiving votes in the most recent poll.
