Mountain Lions Clinch RMAC Tourney Spot in 3-1 Win

Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team scored three second-half goals to upset No. 14 Regis University and secure a spot in the RMAC tournament in a 3-1 victory tonight in Mountain Lion Stadium. Liam Levy-Philipp, Mathew Cox and Jake McAllister scored the goals to lead UCCS (8-7-1 / 7-5 RMAC) to its first win against Regis since 2006.

It's the fourth straight win of the season for the Mountain Lions to match the third-longest in program history. It's the longest winning streak since October 2003 and it's the sixth win in the last seven games. The win is also the first against a team ranked in the top 15 for Head Coach Johnnie Keen in his third season.

UCCS had its first scoring opportunity within the first two minutes of the game with Cox's shot bounced off of the right goalpost, and Josh Berntsson's follow-up shot was saved by the Ranger goalkeeper. Berntsson took two more shots on goal 20 minutes later, but the Mountain Lions and Rangers were scoreless at halftime.

The Mountain Lions had shots hit the post and cross bar on a possession seven minutes into the second half, and Levy-Philipp broke the stalemate seven minutes later with his second goal of the season. Goals came five minutes later from Cox on an assist from James Roberts, and McAllister closed out the scoring six minutes after Cox on an assist from Levy-Philipp. Regis scored with 3:23 left in regulation to avoid its first shutout in two weeks.

Roberts moved alone into sixth in UCCS career records with his 51st career point on the assist, and he moved into a tie for sixth in season points with No. 23 tonight.

The Mountain Lions will play in the RMAC tournament for the fourth straight season and is in a tie for third with MSU Denver and Colorado Mines. The No. 3 and No. 4 seeds will host the No. 5 and No. 6 seeds in the opening round of the conference tournament on Nov. 4, while the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds will receive byes into the conference semifinals on Nov. 7.

UCCS will enjoy a week off from competition before the start of the final regular season weekend on Oct. 31. The Mountain Lions will play at 11 a.m., at Colorado Christian.
