Comeback Falls Short as UCCS Goes Five Sets with #23 MSU Denver

Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs from a 2-0 match deficit with 25-17 and 25-23 wins in the third and fourth set, but No. 23 Metropolitan State University of Denver claimed the match with a 15-2 decision in the fifth set tonight in the Gallogly Events Center. The Mountain Lions (9-12 / 5-7 RMAC) were led by Kim Catlett's match-high 18 kills and team-high 19 digs against the Roadrunners (17-3 / 11-1 RMAC).

UCCS scored the first six points of the first set with five points off kills, and opened an 11-3 lead with an 89 percent hitting percentage. The Mountain Lions led at 21-14 before the Roadrunners put together an 11-1 run to win the first set 25-22. MSU Denver continued the momentum with the first six points in the second set and took a 2-0 match lead in a 25-23 set decision.

Lauren Hahn made three kills in a six-point UCCS rally early in the third set to put the Mountain Lions ahead 8-5. UCCS built a 13-7 lead on a five-point run and hit .200 in the set for a 25-17 victory. A 9-2 run in the fourth set broke a 7-7 tie to put the Mountain Lions ahead 15-9, and UCCS didn't trail the rest of the set to win 25-23 and force a deciding fifth set.

MSU Denver scored the first seven points of the fifth set and hit .294 to claim the 3-2 match win in a 15-2 set. It was the second top-25 team and match against one of the teams tied for the conference lead in as many nights for the Mountain Lions.

Hahn finished the night with 14 kills for her second straight match with double-digit kills. She made a season-high two solo blocks and her four total blocks matched her best performance of the conference season. Bush and Madison Palmer added four blocks each, and Natasha Habert added 18 digs for the Mountain Lion defense.

UCCS and MSU Denver will play each other again on Friday night in Denver in a 7 p.m., match at the Auraria Events Center.
