Calhoun Leads UCCS to 3-0 Shutout in Season-Opener

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team used two second-half goals by freshman J.R. Calhoun as it opened the season with a convincing 3-0 win against St. Mary's University Thursday night at Mountain Lion Stadium.

The Mountain Lions were able to go ahead early and never looked back.

James Roberts was able to connect on a header after Colton Briscoe sent one into the box from 35 yards out during the 12th minute. 

That allowed UCCS to go into halftime up 1-0.

Calhoun, the Canyon Country, Calif. native, had a tremendous night that included a sure-footed goal off an assist from Liam Levy-Philipp during the 46th minute and another goal off a corner kick from Sebastian Hertzberg during the 65th minute.

Senior goalkeeper Brandon Costa notched his first shutout of the season with seven saves.

Up Next: The Mountain Lion's are off till next Friday, 13 Sept. when they take on Eastern New Mexico at home.  The game starts at 5 p.m.
