Roberts Leads UCCS to 3-2 Upset Against #16 Fort Lewis

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - James Roberts scored his second goal of the game in the 99th minute to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team (2-1-2, 1-0-2 RMAC) to a 3-2 upset of No. 16 Fort Lewis (4-2-1 / 1-2 RMAC) tonight at Mountain Lion Stadium. It was the first home win against the Skyhawks since 2001.

The Mountain Lions never trailed to the Skyhawks and claimed their second win against Fort Lewis in the last three meetings. UCCS defeated Fort Lewis when it was ranked No. 17 in Durango in 2012.

J.R. Calhoun scored the opening goal in the 40th minute in the left corner after he received the throw-in from Roberts. The 1-0 lead held for UCCS until halftime.

Fort Lewis scored early in the second half to even the score, and then Roberts put the Mountain Lions ahead again just more than three minutes later on a pass from Austin Bell. The Skyhawks tied the game again with less than four minutes remaining to force the third straight overtime game for the Mountain Lions.

UCCS took the only shots in the overtime period before Roberts headed in the game-winning goal into the upper right corner with 1:21 left in the period. Two of the three shots were on frame against Fort Lewis keeper Ryan Pakieser.

Roberts led both teams with six shots and scored his third and fourth goals of the season to take the team lead. Brandon Costa made five saves to lead the defense against a top-20 team in the nation in scoring offense.

Up Next: UCCS will take on its second nationally-ranked opponent in as many games at home with No. 9 Colorado Mines on Sunday. The Orediggers (4-1-1, 2-1 RMAC) lost to Colorado Christian tonight in Golden, Colo.
