Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - After 110 minutes of play nothing could be decided between the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (6-8-3 / 5-6-3 RMAC) and Colorado Mesa University (11-5-3 / 8-3-3 RMAC) who played to a 1-1 tie through double overtime in the quarterfinals of the RMAC tournament. Due to the nature of the match being a playoff game it headed to a shootout where the Mavericks won the shootout 6-5 to advance.

The two teams ended up playing a total of 330 minutes of undecided soccer this season with the shootout being the ultimate difference in the season series that now stands at 1-0-2 in favor of CMU.

Marco Escobar had a goal for the Mavericks early in the first-half scoring in the 9th minute off a pass from Austin Jex to give CMU an early 1-0 lead.

Sebastian Hertzberg answered for the Mountain Lions shortly thereafter converting on his only shot in the first-half to knot things up at 1-1 in the 17th minute. The goal was Hertzberg's fifth of the season.

After the early flurry of scoring everything was as advertised the rest of the way in what was touted as a defensive battle between two of the best defenses in the RMAC.

Given the chance, both teams probably could have played another 330 minutes without determining a victor. However, someone had to advance to play Colorado School of Mines and what more exciting ending that a shootout.

Hertzberg, Colton Briscoe, James Roberts, Cort Searls and Blake Barnes all converted on their PK attempts respectively to keep pace with the Mavericks who did likewise through their first five attempts as well.

NCAA Soccer rule 7.1.2.3 dictates that "if the score still is tied after each team has taken five kicks, kicks shall continue alternately in the same order until a team has one more goal in the same number of kicks."

The Mountain Lions sixth shooter was Marshall Hiner who had his shot blocked by RMAC Goalkeeper of the Year Micah Conrads leaving the door open for CMU to win it. On their next shot they did just that as Sean Foster got one past UCCS keeper Brandon Costa to seal the deal.
