COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
Sebastian Hertzberg had his first career hat trick in a dominating 3-0 win for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (3-4-2 / 2-3-2 RMAC) over Colorado State University-Pueblo (1-9-1 / 0-6-1 RMAC) at Mountain Lion Stadium Wednesday night.
The Mountain Lions had been on a losing skid of late dropping their previous three contests. Backed against the preverbal wall however, UCCS came out swinging against their conference rival in what was also the first game of the Steel and Silver Series between UCCS and CSU-Pueblo.
The Stockholm, Sweden native's first goal came off a deflected pass from J.R Calhoun in the 34th minute and found the left side of the net despite CSU-Pueblo goalkeeper Sam Haseltine getting a hand on it.
UCCS went into halftime leading 1-0 and kept the Thunderwolves from getting anything really going on offense as they only attempted four shots in the first iteration.
The second-half saw Hertzberg and Calhoun connect again as Calhoun set Hertzberg up for a beautiful one timer from 15 yards out to make the score 2-0 in the 54th minute.
If some is good, more is better seemed to be the thought process late in the game for UCCS as
James Roberts sent a long pass to Hertzberg that allowed him to convert on his third goal of the night in the 79th minute and make up the final 3-0 score.
It had been 1,074 days since the last UCCS hat trick. Jason Stewart scored three goals against Colorado Christian on October 31, 2010.
UCCS goalkeeper
Brandon Costa collected his third shutout of the season while gathering two saves. His goal against average now sits at 1.17 on the season.
Up Next: UCCS continues their home stand this weekend with a game Sunday against Colorado Mesa University. The Mountain Lions tied with the Mavericks in their previous meeting this season 1-1. Â Â
