COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- A pair of well-timed second half goals bought the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team (9-4-1, 6-4-1 RMAC) a 2-2 tie with Adams State (5-5-5, 2-4-5 RMAC) tonight at Mountain Lion Stadium.
Adams State struck first in the 24th minute when Grizzly forward Allie Mercado found the top right corner off a header. Despite outshooting the Mountain Lions 10-3, the first half ended in the 1-0 score.Â
After 18 minutes of play into the second half, the grizzlies scored again to add to their lead.
Not to be outdone on their own turf, the Mountain Lions climbed back and netted their first goal at the 73:11 minute mark. Sophomore defender
Annick Pearson scored her second of the season on the play off a corner kick taken by
Michaela Mansfield.Â
Mansfield earned her third assist with the corner kick, tying her for third on the team in points with seven.
Less than six minutes later, it was senior forward
Agnes Arnadottir who scored the-game tying goal for the Mountain Lions. Beating a few defenders, she rocketed a shot from the top of the 18 yard box to beat the ASU goalkeeper in the top right corner. Tonight's goal was the eighth of the season for Arnadottir, who leads the team with 17 points.
A valiant effort in the last ten minutes wasn't enough for UCCS as the 90 minutes of regulation ended in the 2-2 draw. It was a physical battle for both sides as each team drew 15 fouls and a total of five yellow cards were handed out.
The Mountain Lions came out strong and had some great opportunities in both overtime periods, taking seven shots to ASU's two.
Taylor Braden led the effort for UCCS, recording four shots in overtime, and six total in the game. Neither team could notch the game winning goal however, as the match ended with the 2-2 tie.Â
Kelly Schoreder made ten saves in net tonight, her most in one game this season.Â
The Mountain Lions finish the weekend on Sunday when they play host to the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis College (12-3, 8-3 RMAC). Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. at Mountain Lion Stadium.
