Shaswar Leads Mountain Lions to Fourth Straight Victory

PUEBLO, Colo. - Mash Shaswar scored both goals for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs to lead the Mountain Lions (5-4 / 4-2 RMAC) to a 2-1 victory against Colorado State-Pueblo (3-6-1 / 1-4-1 RMAC) today at the Rawlings Soccer Complex.

The sweep by both the men's and women's soccer teams against the ThunderWolves provide the Mountain Lions an early 4-0 lead in the Steel and Silver Series competition between the two athletic programs. UCCS has won the traveling trophy the last seven years.

Shaswar took the first shot of the game for the Mountain Lions in the 12th minute to put UCCS ahead early at 1-0. One ThunderWolf defender fell down to provide a one-on-one opportunity with goalkeeper Patrick Markis, who had come up to contest Shaswar. Liam Levy-Phillip picked up his first assist of the season on the scoring play.

The Mountain Lions kept CSU-Pueblo to a single shot on goal in the first half and just four shots overall as the lead remained in favor for UCCS at halftime.

Shaswar opened a two-goal lead for the Mountain Lions with an unassisted goal in the 59th minute. His sixth goal of the season moved him into a tie for fourth in the RMAC statistics this season. Shaswar also moved into a tie for No. 13 in UCCS program career records with goal No. 11 in his third season with the Mountain Lions.

CSU-Pueblo scored its goal on a penalty kick in the 89th minute to avoid the shutout.

Shaswar led both teams with five shots and three shots on goal. Brandon Vongphackdy came off the bench with three shots as UCCS out-shot its opponent for the third straight game.

The win put the Mountain Lions in second in the RMAC standings after the conclusion of today's games throughout the conference. The victory was also the third straight against the ThunderWolves in the series.

Up Next: UCCS returns to Mountain Lion Stadium for the 2012 Homecoming contest with Colorado Christian on Friday at 5 p.m. The Cougars (1-9 / 0-6 RMAC) dropped a 3-1 decision to Fort Lewis today in Lakewood, Colo.
