Arnadottir Lifts UCCS to Overtime Win Against Highlands

LAS VEGAS, N.M. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team (13-2-1 /  9-2-1 RMAC) used strong goalkeeping and a goal from Agnes Arnadottir to beat New Mexico Highlands (5-9-2 /  3-7-2 RMAC) 1-0 in the first overtime today at Perkins Stadium.

In the first half of the game, the Mountain Lions and Cowgirls battled in a physical game that brought out a yellow card on the Highlands coach along with 18 combined fouls. UCCS out-shot Highlands 6-5 in the first half with the score tied 0-0.

The Mountain Lions were out-shot 13-2 in the second half, and UCCS goalkeeper Kelly Schroeder made five saves to keep the game even at 0-0. The Mountain Lions only managed to get one shot on goal in regulation. The teams battled but neither could score on the other until the 95th minute of the game when the Mountain Lions kept pressuring and the ball found Angela Castellanos, who passed it down the right side to Arnadottir who made a move on a defender and put it in the upper left corner of the net for her eighth goal of the season which put her in the lead for UCCS in scoring.

The Mountain Lions got another great effort from two-time RMAC Defensive Player of the week goalkeeper Schroder who picked up her eighth shutout of the year and No. 14 on her career, which puts her into eighth place on the career RMAC shutouts list. Schroeder leads the RMAC in save percentage, is second in total saves and is third in goals against average.

The win kept UCCS in a tie for first in the RMAC standings with Regis, who defeated Colorado Mesa 1-0 today. The win will ensure that the Mountain Lions will finish no lower than fifth in the conference standings with two games left in the regular season.

The goal by Arnadottir puts her alone into second on the UCCS program records for career goals with 14, which is four behind Kristin Preble for first on the career goals list. Arnadottir is also third on career points list with 36, which is nine behind Preble for second on the UCCS career points list.

Up Next: The Mountain Lions travel to Golden, Colo., on Friday to take on Colorado Mines, which is coming off a 2-0 win over Colorado Christian.
