No. 9 Metro State beats Mountain Lions

DENVER - Alex Wood had 10 kills, but the No. 9-ranked Metro State Roadrunners proved to be more that the University of Colorado Colorado Springs could handle as the Mountain Lions dropped a 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-17) decision Friday evening at Auraria Fieldhouse.

Metro State (14-3, 6-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) outhit UCCS .343 to .122 and had 11 blocks to the Mountain Lions' six.

Wood and Skylar Lewandowski, both playing at considerably less than 100 percent, led UCCS (9-8, 4-4 RMAC) in kills (10) and digs (12) respectively. Nikki Kinzer and Sonja Johnson each added six kills for the Mountain Lions.

Bri Morley led Metro State with 15 kills, while Emily Greenhalgh added 12. All-RMAC libero Ngoc Phan had 25 digs.

The Mountain Lions led 4-0 in the first set and were tied at 10 when metro State put together runs of four and five points to take a 19-13 lead. Morley had six kills in the set as the Roadrunners won 25-20.

Metro State took control of the second set quickly, leading 9-4 and then building it to 15-5. Down 22-11, UCCS closed to 23-15 before dropping the final two points.

Leading 11-10 in the third set after a block by Nikki Kinzer and Sonja Johnson, UCCS gave up seven straight points, four on Greenhalgh kills. The Mountain Lions never got closer than five afterwards.
