Metro State beats UCCS, avenges earlier loss

DENVER - Scott Crawford and Scott Grade each scored twice and Marc Herschberger had a goal and two assists as the Metro State Roadrunners pounded the University of Colorado Colorado Springs 6-0 Sunday at Auraria Field.

With the win, the Roadrunners avenged its 3-1 loss to the Mountain Lions on Sept. 16. Metro State improved to 9-5-1 overall and 7-4 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. UCCS is now 8-7 overall and 6-5 in the RMAC.

Crawford opened the scoring with an unassisted goal after a UCCS turnover in the 40th minute. UCCS took chances in an attempt to even the match and finally paid the price at Grade put in two goals in a 2 minute, 22 second span, the second coming in the 61st minute.

Goals by Crawford (71st minute), Herschberger (81st minute) and T.J. Thiebaut (85th minute) added the insult to the injury.

That injury is minimal, though, for UCCS. The Mountain Lions have 18 points in RMAC play with three eminently winnable matches remaining (the three opponents have a combined 6-25 conference record). To fall out of an RMAC playoff spot, UCCS would have to lose at least two of those while Colorado Mesa won three.

The Mountain Lions can make that scenario moot by beating Colorado Mesa when the teams face each other on Friday at Mountain Lion Stadium.

UCCS, currently in fifth place, could also improve its seeding in the playoffs with a strong finish.
