COLORADO SPRINGS - The University of Colorado at Colorado at Colorado Springs Mountain Lions were defeated 1-0 by the defending National Champions Fort Lewis Skyhawks Sunday at Mountain Lion Stadium. In what could have been a statement match, the Mountain Lions found themselves tongue tied.
UCCS played to the strategy of using long-balls.
"We were trying to be more dangerous and put a lot more speed up front." said UCCS forward
Matt Friesen. "Defensive wise we knew they were good on set pieces so that's what we worked on. They have a couple big guys that get in the box so we were just making sure they were marked."
Fabian Kling scored the only goal of the game for the Skyhawks off of a direct kick from around the 20 yard line. Kling found a gap in the Mountain Lion wall and the ball grazed off the shoulder of a UCCS player.
The Mountain Lions have not beaten the Skyhawks in nine years. The last win was recorded on October 27, 2001 when the Mountain Lions defeated the Skyhawks 1-0 in Colorado Springs.
The Mountain Lions drop to 1-8-1 overall and 0-5-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. They take on the Regis Rangers Sunday at noon.
