COLORADO SPRINGS - The Regis Rangers defeated the UCCS Mountain Lion s 3-1 Sunday at Mountain Lion Stadium. All three goals scored by the Rangers happened within a four-minute period in the first half.
"We kind of shut off for a little and then we had some players make mistakes that rarely make mistakes," said UCCS coach Henry Ellis, "and Regis punished us for it."
Kyle Emge scored the first goal for the Rangers off an assist from Keegan Bast in the ninth minute of the game. Bast passed the ball over UCCS defenders and found Emge who one touched it into the lower left corner of the net.
Nathan Kafer had the second goal in the 11th minute of the game. UCCS defenders were trying to clear the ball when it was blocked by a Regis player and then put in by Kafer.
Patrick Freeman had the third and final goal for the Rangers during the 12th minute of play. Freeman hit the ball from the 40 yard line and put it over the UCCS goal keeper's hands.
UCCS's lone goal was scored by mid-fielder
Eric Goldberg.
"
Brett Drefs took the free kick and we got a little lucky rebound," said Ellis. "Goldberg brought it down and put it in the back of the net, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to win a game today."
"After we gave up those goals we settled in and played fantastic" said Ellis. "We knocked the ball around well and looked really good as a squad. We have to take the last 70 minutes of the game as a huge positive for us and try to keep moving in the right direction."
The Mountain Lions will hit the road for a four game road trip against Adams State on October 8, Fort Lewis on October 10, Colorado State University Pueblo on October 13, and Colorado Mines on October 15.
