Mountain Lions end scoreless, losing streaks with tie vs. Mesa State

COLORADO SPRINGS - The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Mountain Lions tied the Mesa State Mavericks 1-1 Friday at Mountain Lion Stadium. Matt Friesen had the loan goal of the game during the seventh minute, ending a Mountain Lions dry spell that had lasted 404 minutes.

UCCS scored their first goal in five games. The previous opponents that shut out the Mountain Lions consisted of Colorado State University Pueblo, Colorado Mines, Metro State, and Midwestern State.

"We got a point and we stopped our skid," said Coach Henry Ellis. "It's a big confidence booster right now for us just mentally as a team."

Jaron Stewart had the assist to Friesen and described the attempt by saying, "I saw Matt running through the backline and the three defenders turned off for a bit," said UCCS senior Jaron Stewart, who had the assist on the play. "I put a ball in, Matt turned and shot into the back of the net. We needed it."

Adam Liszewski finished with five saves for UCCS (1-6-1, 0-3-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference). Chris raines stopped eight shots for Mesa State (4-3-1, 0-3-1 RMAC)..

UCCS now has a record of 1-6-1 over-all and 0-3-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mountain Lions will take on the Fort Lewis Skyhawks on Sunday at noon at Mountain Lion Stadium.
