PUEBLO - For the second time in as many meetings, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs dominated the stat sheet only to come up short against the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves.
The Mountain Lions outshot CSU-Pueblo 24-14 overall and 14-5 in shots on goal but dropped a 3-2 decision Wednesday evening at Rawlings Soccer Complex.
On Sept. 22 at Mountain Lion Stadium, UCCS had a 27-8 advantage in shots but lost 1-0.
On Wednesday, UCCS got a goal from
Jaron Stewart in the eighth minute, taking
Matt Friesen's pass and drilling a deep shot into the upper right corner.
Robert Kinsey tied it in the 13th minute with the first of his two goals.
The Mountain Lions took a 2-1 lead in the 53rd minute on an own goal by CSU-Pueblo. Kinsey answered 27 seconds later, heading in a header by Alex Raygosa.
The Thunderwolves took the lead in the 65th minute on a Dustin Geist goal. UCCS had five shots afterward but couldn't find the net.
Adam Liszewski made two saves for UCCS, which dropped to 2-9-1, 1-6-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Jacob Blum made 12 saves for CSU-Pueblo (7-6, 6-3 RMAC).
The loss gave CSU-Pueblo a sweep of the two-match series for the season and the four points for men's soccer in the 2010-11 Steel & Silver Series. That, combined with a win earlier Wednesday by the UCCS women's soccer team, put the schools tied at four points each.
In each of the 10 intercollegiate athletics programs that both schools sponsor - men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, men's golf, women's cross country, softball, volleyball, and women's indoor and outdoor track and field - the school that earns the most wins in head-to-head competition is awarded four points. If the head-to-head competitions are split evenly, each school is awarded two points. The school with the best cumulative grade point average among student-athletes in the school's common sports will also be awarded five points.
All four points for women's volleyball will be on the line when the schools meet on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Massari Arena. In addition, UCCS has already clinched at least two points in men's golf.
