COLORADO SPRINGS - Adam Liszewski had six saves and Jaron Stewart make a penalty kick as the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and the Regis Rangers played to a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon at Mountain Lion Stadium.

"The big thing for us today is we got the point," said UCCS coach Henry Ellis. "We've talked about raising our maturity level to outlast games like this and today we did that. We got good chances, but we still stayed smart defensive-wise.

"Hopefully, we can continue to grow and maybe next time put some of those away to bring home the W."

The match was every bit as even as the score. UCCS (2-3-1, 0-1-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) had 19 shots to 15 for Regis (3-2-1, 1-0-1 RMAC).

A couple of Liszewski's saves were spectacular. He made a horizontal stop at the 18:50 mark of a Nathan Kafer shot that would have snuck inside the far post. He also made a sliding stop in the first overtime to keep the game going.

Regis finally got one past Liszewski in the 36th minute. Donny Montoya played a corner kick short to DelPiccolo, who sent a roller across the goal mouth without damage. Brannan collected it and sent it back across, where DelPiccolo punched it in.

"That was a lack of communication; the whole team's thing," said Liszewski. "I said step (out) and no one stepped - maybe I didn't say it loud enough. No one stepped to (Brannan) and he was able to get that one touch to (DelPiccolo)."

But that proved to be the only communication breakdown for a UCCS defense that featured Garrett Maloney, Carlos Verdugo, Gilbert Chavez, Eric Goldberg and Jordan Hacker.

The Mountain Lions scored the equalizer after Matt Friesen was pulled down in the penalty area in the 55th minute, resulting in a penalty kick that Stewart converted.

"Everybody was looking around so I just stepped up and decided to take it and put it on my shoulders," said Stewart, who added, after a little prodding, "and I scored."

Kyle Emge got a point-blank shot in the first overtime that Liszewski and Hacker blocked. Emge was uncovered as he took a loose ball just eight yards away from the UCCS goal. Liszewski slid toward his feet, hands outstretched to make himself as big a barrier as possible while Hacker closed from the back side. Emgeâ€TMs solid strike deflected out of bounds.

In the second overtime, it was UCCS with the close call. Dami Oladiran headed a ball toward the far post, catching Fink out of position for perhaps the first time in the match. Matt Friesen reached out a led and was able to deflect the pass, but not quite enough, as it harmlessly skimmed past the post.

With just over five minutes remaining, UCCSâ€TM Mike Mason was charging just wide of the left post and got enough room to send a hard shot toward the far post. A Regis defender was barely able to deflect the ball wide.

"We were pressing really hard, especially in overtime, and we were really tired," said Stewart. "All it takes is one little flick and it's in the back of the net but, unfortunately, we didn't get one there."

Over the past two seasons, UCCS had been 1-12-1 in matches when its opponent scored first.

Wait … make that two ties now.
