Lopers Waste Little Time in Beating UCCS

KEARNEY, Neb. - Through the first nine matches of the season, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs volleyball team has given tantalizing glimpses of just how good it could eventually become. Saturday at the Health and Sports Center, the Mountain Lions got a harsh lesson in just how far they have to go to get there.

Behind 13 kills by Jeri Walkowiak, the No. 9-ranked Nebraska-Kearney Lopers quickly dispatched UCCS 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-11) in a contest that lasted just one hour, five minutes.

Nebraska-Kearney shredded a UCCS defense that, up to this point, had been one of the team's strengths. The Lopers had 50 kills with just nine errors on 94 attempts for a Nintendo-like .436 hitting percentage. The Mountain Lions countered by hitting .073.

Cola Svec, the RMAC setter of the year in 2008, had 42 assists, eight digs and two kills. Chelsie Carson and Kelsey Werner each added nine kills, while Erica Burson and Nikki Scott had eight and seven respectively.

Sonja Johnson led UCCS (6-4, 1-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) with five kills while Nicole Pederson and Andrea Brodie each added four. Kendall Utz had a team-high 11 digs and Cindy Bathelt had 16 assists.
