Mitchell's hat trick propels Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. - Kayla Mitchell scored a hat trick to lead the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers to a 4-0 win over the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs in women's soccer action Friday afternoon at CSM Soccer Field.

Allie Strange scored the other Oredigger goal. Angelica Schira and Megan Woodworth added assists.

Mines peppered the Mountain Lions with 19 shots, 11 by Mitchell who has an RMAC-leading 13 goals this season. UCCS freshman Kayla Millar, making her third consecutive start in place of injured Ashley Armstrong, made eight saves.

Briana Schulze made three saves in 67:25 for Mines. Penny Rogers played the final 22:35 and also made three saves.

Mitchell gave Mines a 2-0 lead scoring back-to-back goals just one minute and 51 seconds apart. After a through-ball found the feet of Mitchell both Millar and a defender converged on the ball. Mitchell came up with the ball to score her 11th goal of the season.

In the 24th minute after being taken down just outside the box, Mitchell drilled a free kick just under the crossbar.

Mines added one more goal in the first half in the 39th minute. Schira was able to control a ball near the edge of the box on the right side. Schira made a short pass to Stange, who drove a shot from 18 yards out to score her first collegiate goal.

Mitchell completed the hat trick in the 53rd minute of the match. Woodworth chipped a ball to Mitchell, who was just outside the six-yard box, and she headed it in for her fifth career hat trick. Mitchell now has six goals in just three career games against UCCS.
