Kayla Millar earned her second career shutout at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs defeated the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls Friday afternoon at Perkins Stadium.
Millar, who took over in goal for the Mountain Lions after starter
Ashley Armstrong was injured in the fifth game of the season, made seven saves. New Mexico Highlands kept the UCCS defense busy with 21 shots.
Royer, a sophomore transfer from Hastings College, scored her first goal as a Mountain Lion at the 11:30 mark. It was UCCS' third shot of the game and, over the final 78:30 of the match, the Mountain Lions concentrated on defense with only six more shot attempts.
The defense-first strategy worked as UCCS improved to 4-5, 3-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mountain Lions have won two of their past three matches.
It was the fourth straight loss for the Cowgirls, who dropped to 2-11, 2-6 in the RMAC.
