Loss to Mesa State gives Mountain Lions first home defeat

COLORADO SPRINGS - Two days after suffering its first loss of the season, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs dropped its first home match with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Mesa State Mavericks Sunday at Mountain Lion Stadium.

The first year Mountain Lions program dropped to 2-2-1, 0-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Mesa State dominated the midfield throughout the first half, allowing the Mavericks to keep pressure on the UCCS defense. That pressure paid off in the 16th minute, when Katrina Hatfield high-kicked a bouncing ball in the right corner. Her crossing pass was perfect, putting Daniela Ramirez in position to head the ball into the lower left corner of the net.

Less than six minutes later, Alyssa Michel send a hard shot from 20 yards out the barely cleared the outstretched fingers of UCCS goalkeeper Amie Kern and grazed the bottom of the crossbar before settling into the net. Kylie Kegans was credited with the assist.

UCCS was able to solve its midfield woes in the second half, forcing Kaitlyn Bennett, who relieved starter Julie Rasmussen (2-1), to make four saves. The Mountain Lions were unable, though, to score.

Amie Kern (2-2-1) made three saves for UCCS.
