No. 2-ranked Washburn proves to be a little too much, too soon

PUEBLO- No. 2 proved to be a little too much, too soon for the young Mountain Lions.

The No. 2-ranked Washburn Lady Blues defeated the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-16) Friday afternoon at Massari Arena in the second game of the CSU-Pueblo Fall Classic.

UCCS coach Jessica Wood acknowledged that facing a nationally ranked opponent is a challenge.

"I think it always is," said Wood. "Washburn's a good team. They played very, very well."

That might be particularly so for a team like the Mountain Lions, who have a roster featuring six freshmen, two sophomores, three juniors and just one senior. Though admitting it was a factor, Wood downplayed the role of her team's inexperience.

"I think the girls played well," said Wood. "We had a few lulls, but it wasn't necessarily our youth; it was our communication."

Mollie Lacey led Washburn (2-0) with 10 kills, while Kate Hampson had 35 assists.

Lauren Orth led UCCS with nine kills.
