LAKEWOOD-
Molly Crockett had 14 kills to lead the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 25-19) victory over the Colorado Christian Cougars Tuesday evening at Cougar Fieldhouse.
Lauren Orth added eight kills for the Mountain Lions (13-14, 8-10 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference), while
Andrea Brodie had six.
UCCS hit over .200 in each of the three sets it won, and .000 in the second set, which it lost. For the match, the Mountain Lions hit .164.
Cassie Schott led Colorado Christian (7-22, 2-16 RMAC) with 14 kills.
UCCS held a slim 17-16 lead in the first set when a kill by Crockett, a service ace by Brodie and a bad set extended the advantage to four. After two Cougar points, the Mountain Lions got two kills by
Cassey Santucci and another by Crockett to help them close with a 5-1 run.
It was Colorado Christian that closed strong in the second set, though. After a service error ace UCCS a 21-20 lead, Brooke Wittmayer served a four-point rally. A UCCS point later, Schott closed it out with a kill.
The Mountain Lions raced to a 9-2 lead in the third set and never looked back. Colorado Christian got as close as 18-16, but setter
Jessica Stewart got two of her three kills (she also had 25 assists) to close it out.
The Cougars held the lead in the first half of the fourth set, but UCCS was able to surge back to tie it at 11. It was still tied at 15 when two Crockett kills sparked a 4-1 rally. Two consecutive points allowed CCU to close to within one, but UCCS answered with two three-point rallies sandwiched around one Cougar point.
