Inaugural season for UCCS women's soccer ends with loss

The inaugural season of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs women's soccer program came to an end Sunday as the Mountain Lions were beaten 3-1 by the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers at Mountain Lion Stadium.

Kayla Mitchell scored twice for the Orediggers (11-4-3, 9-2-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference), who will advance to the RMAC playoffs. Mitchell's 21 goals for the season equaled the output for the entire UCCS team.

Mitchell opened the scoring less than two minutes into the match, taking an Elizabeth Oba through pass and sliding it past UCCS goalkeeper Amie Kern.

The Mountain Lions scored the equalizer less than eight minutes later. Jessica Escobedo collected a crossing pass, faked a turn and slid a pass back to Brianna Guzzardo, who was charging up the middle. Guzzardo's 35-yard shot snuck under the crossbar and just inside the left post.

The tie would last until the 53rd minute, when Mitchell converted an Adrea Johnson cross.

The clincher came in the 75th minute. Allison Heeg sent a through pass to Kim Lockard, who one-touched a crossing pass that found Sam Cardenas making a far-post run. Cardenas headed the ball in.

Kern made 11 saves for UCCS, which finished the season with a 5-13-1 record overall and 3-10 in the RMAC.
