Mines blanks Mountain Lions

GOLDEN - The injury-depleted University of Colorado at Colorado Springs women's soccer team proved no match Friday afternoon for the Colorado School of Mines as the Orediggers took a 4-0 win at Long Lake Ranch Park.

The loss extended the Mountain Lions' losing streak to seven. UCCS is now 2-7-1 overall and 0-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Mines improves to 6-2-2, 4-0-1 in the RMAC.

The Mountain Lions were again without starting injured defenders Jelisa Guy and Lindsay Link, absences that have proven costly. UCCS allowed just five goals through the first six matches of the season, but have been scorched for 12 over the past four.

The Orediggers opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Elizabeth Oba bent a free kick that UCCS goalkeeper Amie Kern got a hand on but could not stop.

The final three goals all came on passes through the Mountain Lions defense. The first saw Kayla Mitchell converting a long through ball from Allison Heeg in the 57th minute. The second, less than three minutes later, was an Andrea Johnson pass into space that Allison Oien ran onto and sipped past Kern.

The final goal came with less than four minutes remaining. Joanna Graves sent a pass over the top, giving Sam Cardenas a breakaway opportunity.

Kern made seven saves in the loss. Briana Schulze made four saves to earn the win.
