PUEBLO - Colorado State-Pueblo struck first in the 2008-09 Steel & Silver Series as the Thunderwolves' women's soccer team beat the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs 1-0 Sunday to complete the season series sweep.
Marli Martin scored on a Rikki Warmack pass in the 70th minute Sunday. Martin took the pass, dribbled to her right, looked up and lashed home her third goal of the season. It was one of 20 Thunderwolves shots in the match.
UCCS, meanwhile, managed just four shots. CSU-Pueblo's Chrissy Mandarich needed to make just one save to record the shutout.
The Mountain Lions have now been shut out in four of their past five matches and seven times overall this season.
Amie Kern made five saves in the losing effort for the Mountain Lions.
This season's Steel & Silver Series is on a new, "winner-take-all" points system. In each of the 10 intercollegiate athletics programs that both schools sponsor "men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, men's golf, women's cross country, softball, volleyball, and women's indoor and outdoor track and field" the school that earns the most wins in head-to-head competition will be awarded four points. If the head-to-head competitions are split evenly, each school will be awarded two points. The school with the best cumulative grade point average among student-athletes in the school's common sports will also be awarded five points. The school with the most points at the end of the academic year will be awarded the Ent Federal Credit Union Trophy, with the presentation taking place in the home city of the winning school.
Because CSU-Pueblo won both women's soccer matches between the schools, the Thunderwolves took a 4-0 lead in the series. The UCCS men's soccer team won Sunday's afternoon match against the Thunderwolves to split the season series. The two results has CSU-Pueblo owning an early 6-2 lead in this season's series.
