James McMonigle scored at the 61-minute mark to lead the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Christian Cougars Friday afternoon at Lakewood.
The win ended a six-match winless streak for the Mountain Lions (4-6-1, 2-4-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference).
"We found it a little difficult to get in sync," said UCCS coach Flavio Mazzetti. "We're just happy to get a win the way things have been going."
With the loss, Colorado Christian fell to 0-8-1, 0-6 RMAC. The Cougarsâ€TM last win came on Oct. 24, 2004.
"I want to give a lot of credit to CCU," said Mazzetti. "They played their hearts out."
McMonigle's goal came after a UCCS free kick from the right flank and 40 yards out.
Greg Packer took the free kick and sent a low pass that McMonigle took in stride. McMonigle tucked the ball just inside the near post past Cougars goalkeeper A.J. Kurtz.
"It was a great run and a great finish by McMonigle," said Mazzetti.
UCCS freshman
Isaac Kostrow (1-3) made five saves to earn his first collegiate victory. His counterpart, Kurtz, also recorded five saves.
"Kostrow made some big saves to keep us in it," said Mazzetti.
The Mountain Lions will play at Colorado School of Mines on Sunday.
