Stephanie Laband had a career-high 13 kills as the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs avenged an earlier defeat to top the Armstrong Atlantic Pirates 3-2 (26-30, 30-19, 30-27, 26-30, 15-13) Saturday morning.
The win was the Mountain Lions' third contest at the Grand Canyon Cactus Classic in Phoenix. UCCS (3-5) completed its tournament with a 3-0 (30-22, 30-20, 30-18) loss to Grand Canyon Saturday evening.
Andrea Weedman and
Caroline Ottino matched Laband's 13 kills against Armstrong Atlantic, which had topped the Mountain Lions 3-1 on Aug. 25.
Defensively, UCCS had 10 blocks led by
Brooke Akers' two solos and four assisted. When attacks got past the block,
Laura Meeter (25 digs), Weedman (21 digs) and
Jessica Stewart (11 digs) were there to keep the ball in play.
Stewart and Courtney Weedman, who have been sharing setter duties, had 26 and 20 assists respectively.
The Mountain Lions will compete in the first of two RMAC East/West crossover tournaments on Friday and Saturday.
