The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs struggled on the opening day of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference East/West Crossover Tournament, dropping a 3-0 (30-22, 30-26, 30-27) decision to the Fort Lewis Skyhawks and falling 3-1 (30-15, 30-26, 20-30, 30-26) to the Western New Mexico Mustangs Friday at the Auraria Events Center in Denver.
Sara Feehan and Leeane Greenwade each had 13 kills as Fort Lewis (10-1, 2-0 RMAC) swept the Mountain Lions in the early match. The Skyhawks' quick-set offense proved effective as the Skyhawks hit an impressive .288 for the match.
Brooke Akers and
Jill Wrenn led the Mountain Lions (3-6) with eight kills each.
Akers recorded a team-high 15 kills and a match-high eight blocks against Western New Mexico. UCCS (3-7, 0-2 RMAC) had a season-high 14 blocks in the match but also committed 12 more hitting errors and four more service errors than the Mustangs.
Caroline Ottino had 13 kills and
Andrea Weedman added 11.
Jennifer Snowbarger and Meghan Watson each had 15 kills for Western New Mexico (9-2, 2-0 RMAC)
The Mountain Lions will play Colorado State-Pueblo and Mesa State on Saturday to conclude their participation in the first of two crossovers.
