Mountain Lions take tournament finale

COLORADO SPRINGS - Andrea Weedman had 20 kills and 17 digs as the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs wrapped up the 2006 AmeriSuites/Mountain Lion Invitational with a 3-1 (30-18, 31-33, 30-28, 30-26) victory over the Georgian Court Lions Saturday night at the Lions' Den.

The Mountain Lions (2-2) also got 16 kills from Diane Sheldon and 11 from Brooke Akers.

Georgian Court (0-4) was led by Ann Casado's 18 kills and 21 digs.

UCCS went to a two-setter lineup for the first time this season with largely positive results. Sophomore Jessica Stewart registered 28 assists while freshman Cortney Weedman added 29.

The Mountain Lions cruised to a 30-18 decision in Game 1 and were leading 29-15 in Game 2 when Georgian Court reeled off four straight points. UCCS again had a chance to serve for the game at 31-30, but two Casado kills lifted GCU to a 33-31 win.

Georgian Court raced to a 7-1 lead in Game 3 before UCCS went on a 12-3 run. The game was tied at 28 when Weedman and Jill Wrenn notched kills to put the Mountain Lions up 2-1.

The Mountain Lions trailed only once, at 4-3, in Game 4, leading by as many as six before a Weedman kill sealed the match.
