Game Recap: Volleyball | | Doug Fitzgerald - UCCS Sports Information Director

Volleyball comeback falls short in loss to Metro State

Diane Sheldon had 17 kills, 16 digs and four aces but it wasn't enough to prevent the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs from dropping a 3-2 (30-19, 31-29, 31-33, 28-30, 15-12) decision to the Metro State Roadrunners Friday night at the Auraria Events Center.

The loss ended the Mountain Lions' season-best, four-match winning streak.

Caroline Ottino added 11 kills for UCCS (11-11, 8-6 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference), which managed to stay in the match despite being outhit .214 to .102.

After Metro State grabbed a relatively easy 30-19 decision in Game 1, a kill by Julie Green and an assisted block by Green and Sheena Bohannon closed out a 31-29 win in Game 2 and gave the Roadrunners a commanding 2-0 lead.

Metro State was looking to make it a sweep by building a 20-15 lead in Game 3. Two kills each by Sheldon and Ottino, though, helped UCCS forge a 8-2 run that tied the game at 22. It was still tied at 31 when a Metro State hitting error and a service ace by Brooke Akers forced a fourth game.

An ace by Andrea Weedman gave UCCS its largest lead in Game 4 at 20-15, but the Roadrunners (13-8, 10-4 RMAC) were able to close to 28-27. The Mountain Lions stayed in the match after a Metro State service error and another Sheldon kill gave them a 30-28 decision.

UCCS, which had played with relatively few mistakes while winning seven of its previous eight matches, was bitten by the error bug in Game 5. Trailing 12-10, the Mountain Lions helped Metro State close the deal by committing a blocking error, a setting error and a service error.

Green led the Roadrunners with 26 kills, while Bohannon added 18 and Stefanie Allison had 17. Stephanie Levi was effective at setter with 68 assists.

UCCS will play Colorado Christian in Lakewood on Saturday afternoon.
