Volleyball sets record with win

The Mountain Lion volleyball team set one record Friday night and will shoot to tie another on Saturday.

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs won its fifth conference game in a row, a 3-1(26-30, 30-19, 31-29, 30-18) victory over the Adams State Grizzlies Friday night at Alamosa.

The Mountain Lions will try to equal the school's all-time record for consecutive wins on Saturday, when they shoot for their eighth in a row at New Mexico Highlands. That match will also decide first place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Western Division, at least for the first time through the schedule. UCCS is currently 5-0 in the conference and 8-5 overall. Highlands is 4-1 in the RMAC, 9-2 overall.

Friday, the Mountain Lions enjoyed an efficient offense led by Jill Wrenn (13 kills, .414 hitting percentage), Kelley Angel (16, .400), Diane Sheldon (nine, .227) and Andrea Weedman (15, .160). As a team, UCCS hit .238 - the team's second-best effort of the season.

Wrenn also factored into eight of the Mountain Lions' 11 blocks.

Adams State took game one behind seven kills by Tiffany Stockenbrand, who finished with a team-high 16.

Leading by just two (18-16) in game two, the Mountain Lions went on a 7-1 run behind Stephanie Laband's serving and eventually closed the game out with four kills in a 5-rally stretch before a Grizzly miscue evened the match.

Game three featured 18 ties and seven lead changes. The set was tied at 27 when and Adams State service error and a Wrenn kill gave UCCS a pair of game points. The grizzlies answered with kills by Stockebrand and Megan Jennings to knot the score. Adams State was whistled for a double hit, then Angel and Wrenn combined for a block to give the Mountain Lions a 31-29 win and a 2-games-to-1 advantage.

UCCS raced to a 9-2 lead in Game 3 and led 15-10 when freshman Marie Ottino served a 6-0 run to put the game, and the match, out of reach.
