Game Recap: Volleyball | | Doug Fitzgerald - UCCS Sports Information Director

Volleyball dominates stats, loses match

Despite an 83-46 advantage in kills, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs was defeated 3-2 (19-30, 30-27, 25-30, 35-33, 15-13) by the Cameron Aggies Thursday night at the Lions' Den.

The math of the loss was atrocious. The Mountain Lions committed 45 hitting errors, 19 service errors, 10 ball handling errors, one setting error and one blocking error. That's 76 points given away, which allowed Cameron to escape with a win despite managing only a meager .088 hitting percentage. To put it another way, UCCS was responsible for 61.3 percent of the Aggies' points.

On the positive side, the Mountain Lions displayed a ferocious power game, which bodes well down the road if they can eliminate the gaffes. UCCS serves were difficult to handle, resulting in 10 aces and many weak attacks. Offensively, the Mountain Lions hit with authority - particularly on shorter sets.

All of this leaves UCCS in an identity crisis, looking like the NYPD at times and the Keystone Kops at others,

Kelley Angel and Diane Sheldon led the Mountain Lions with 23 kills each. Andrea Weedman added 15 kills and a team-high 26 digs, while Jill Wrenn had 10 kills.

Ashley Rikard and Alysha Pritt led Cameron with 13 kills each.

The Mountain Lions loss was the first match of the inaugural AmeriSuites Mountain Lion Invitational, which will continue Friday and Saturday.
