Mountain Lions stay alive, beat CSU-P

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs beat its biggest rival Tuesday evening in Pueblo. The Mountain Lions won a hard-fought match over the Colorado State-Pueblo Thunderwolves 3-1 (24-30, 30-24, 30-28, 32-30).

The match was played at Pueblo East High School, which is about two miles from the CSU-Pueblo campus. The venue change was made because the bleachers at CSU-Pueblo's Massari Gym must be inspected before they may be used.

The win helped CU-Colorado Springs keep its slim playoff hopes alive. If the Mountain Lions are going to overtake the Adams State Grizzlies for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's eighth and final playoff spot, three things must happen.

First, CU-Colorado Springs (13-14, 8-10 RMAC) must beat Fort Lewis Friday night in the Lions' Den. In addition to that, Adams State must lose its final two matches of the season, at Mesa State on Friday and at Western State Saturday.

While this scenario may seem like a longshot on the surface, it is certainly plausible. Adams State is a woeful 2-7 on the road this season and has lost five of its past six road matches. Fort Lewis has also struggled this season. The Skyhawks are just 5-20 and haven't won a game on the road since Nov. 1, 2003.

Kelley Angel had an incredible match. Angel was a defensive force at the net all night, tallying nine total blocks (two solo, seven assist). Angel also had 11 kills and hit .400.

Andrea Weedman led the Mountain Lions with 20 kills and 11 digs. Kelly Olson had a match-high 23 digs. Lindsey Hillegass dished out 55 assists to go along with her 10 digs.

After the teams traded six-point wins in the first two games, the Mountain Lions found themselves down 28-27 late in Game 3. Back-to-back Weedman kills followed by a Weedman service ace led the Mountain Lions to three straight points and the win.

The Mountain Lions fought off two game-points in Game 4 before tying the game at 30-30. Two Colorado State-Pueblo attack errors brought an end to the match.

The win avenges a 3-1 loss to the Thunderwolves in the Lions' Den back on Sept 14.
